Earn Rewards with Scotiabank Debit Cards

There are only a handful of debit cards in Canada that offer rewards. Scotiabank offer multiple options, with Scotiabank Passport Debit Card being the most recent addition. Below are the debit cards available:

Scotiabank Passport Debit Card

  • $3.95 monthly fee
  • No monthly fee for seniors
  • Earn 10,000 sign up bonus points
  • Earn 1 Scotia Rewards point for every $5 spent

Scotiabank Scene Debit Card

  • Earn 5,000 sign up bonus points
  • Earn 1 Scene point for every $1 spent at participating Cineplex Entertainment theatres
  • Earn 1 Scene point for every $5 spent on all other purchases

Scotiabank Momentum ScotiaCard

  • $15.95 monthly fee
  • $11.95 monthly fee for seniors
  • Earn 1% cash back on all debit purchases (up to $300 back in the first year)

Who Should Get This?

Personally, I would not go out of my way to get a debit card just go earn points. However, there are a few scenarios where it would make sense.

First of all, if you do not qualify for a credit card, then at least you have a second option to earn points with debit cards.

Secondly, even if you do have a credit card, but do not have sufficient cash flow to pay off the credit card balance in full every month, then I will always recommend not stretching yourself credit wise, in which case, using a debit card would be more appropriate to ensure that you have sufficient funds. For the purposes of earning rewards, if you have to pay interest on your credit card, it will nullify any rewards you may earn.

Conclusion

I am just glad to see some competition being introduced in the debit card world. It can only be a benefit to the consumer!
