[PROMOTION] 15,000 Sign Up Bonus Points with RBC Cathay Pacific Visa Platinum (expired on October 31, 2014)

The RBC Cathay Pacific Visa Platinum is offering a higher than usual sign up bonus. The sign up bonus is temporary increased from 10,000 to 15,000 points. Below are the highlights of the credit card:

  • $150 annual fee
  • $75 for each supplemental cardholder
  • Earn 15,000 sign up bonus points (if you apply before October 31, 2014)
  • Earn 2 points for every $1 CAD spent on Cathay Pacific tickets purchased on the Cathay Pacific website
  • Earn 2 points for every $5 HKD spent on in-flight purchases (minimum purchase of $500 HKD)
  • Earn 1 point for every $1 CAD spent on all other purchases
  • Complimentary Green Tier membership into The Marco Polo Club for primary cardholder (waiver of $50 USD enrolment fee).

If you are a fan of Oneword alliance, then Asia Miles are definitely points that you should consider. However, before I go any further, I would like to indicate that I am very unhappy with the expiry policy. You need to use your points 36 months after they were deposited to avoid losing them. Activity on your account does not keep the points active.

Therefore, if you want to earn Asia Mile points, you will need to be ready to use them fairly soon. So the issue is with Asia Miles rather than RBC. I would like to see Asia Miles change its expiry policy to having activity once every 24 months to keep the account active instead.

Otherwise, anyone Canadian who flies on Cathay Pacific a few times a year should definitely considering having this credit card.  There is a fair variety of insurance coverage:

  • Travel Accident Insurance
  • Auto Rental Collision/Loss Damage Insurance
  • Emergency Purchases & Flight Delay Insurance
  • Hotel/Motel Burglary Insurance
  • Purchase Security & Extended Warranty Insurance
  • Out of Province/Country Emergency Medical Insurance

The Green Tier membership into The Marco Polo Club can be valuable, as well as earning 2 points for every $1 spent on Cathay Pacific flights (or 2 points for every $5 HKD spent).

However, aside from Cathay Pacific passengers, I would not really recommend this credit card for anyone else, because earning 1 point for every $1 spent on all other purchases is fairly standard.
