Starwood Preferred Guest 2018 Category Changes
It is that time of the year when most hotel chains change their categories. Some hotels go up, some go down. Today’s post is regarding the changes with Starwood Hotels and Resorts. There are 276 hotels that are affected, of which in Canada, there are 13 increasing by at least 1 category, while 2 are decreasing.

The changes will take effect on March 6, 2018. If you are looking at a reward redemption of a hotel that is going up in category, you may want to book it as soon as possible. However, if it is a hotel that is going down in category, then wait until after March 6, 2018 to book it.
Reward Categories
Below is a recap of the number of points required for a free hotel night in each category.
- Category 1 (2,000 – 3,000 Starpoints)
- Category 2 (3,000 – 4,000 Starpoints)
- Category 2 (3,000 – 4,000 Starpoints)
- Category 3 (7,000 Starpoints)
- Category 4 (10,000 Starpoints)
- Category 5 (12,000 – 16,000 Starpoints)
- Category 6 (20,000 – 25,000 Starpoints)
- Category 7 (30,000 – 35,000 Starpoints)
