Another Positive Integration from the Marriott and SPG Merger

We just heard from our contacts at Marriott, providing us an update on the progress of the integration with SPG. You can also check out our video interview from the beginning of the merger.

I suspect that every country will feel the integration slightly differently. For Canadians, we have two 2 co-branded Canadian Marriott and SPG credit cards. In terms of how the integration affects these two credit cards, we will be seeing on new positive change and one current promotional offer.

American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card

As of November 15, 2016, the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card will have to following promotion:

  • Earn 2 Starpoints for every eligible dollar spent at participating SPG and Marriott Rewards hotels globally

This actually puts this credit card more in line with the American Express version in the United States. However, it is only a promotional offer that is set to run until November 15, 2017. Could this be a preview of when the credit card is coming to an end?

Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Credit Card

On December 1, 2016, the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa credit card is going to have the following change:

  • Earn 5 Marriott Rewards points for every eligible dollar spent at participating global SPG properties

Currently, cardmembers already earn 5 Marriott Rewards points for every eligible dollar spent at Marriott Rewards properties global.

Thoughts

I am still very disappointed that SPG is going to eventually come to an end. But so far, the integration seems to be going well. Hopefully we really do see a better new product, when all is set and done, than Marriott Rewards or SPG individually. That will give me more confidence in future mergers that are probably inevitable to happen at some point.

For now, great job Marriott and SPG!
