List of Airline Alliances (updated January 15, 2017)

There always seems to be a few changes to airline alliances ever so often, so I thought I’d update the list from 4 months ago.

In case people are wondering why I put this together. As you know, one of the main reasons this blog was created was to help me document my personal research. I find having all the members of airline alliances listed on one page very handy.

Basically my strategy is that if I ever need to pay for a flight, I do not want to miss out on a good price because I need to be loyal to a specific alliance. Instead, I ensure that I have at least one account per airline alliance so that I can at least bank my miles to an account. Another factor (among many others) that I consider is how easy it would be for me to keep that specific loyalty account active, to give myself more time to accumulate enough miles to work with.

Personal Airline Alliance Portfolio

Below is a list of the frequent flyer programs that I concentrate most of my energy with. I have some other accounts, but they are too inactive to be worth mentioning. I would like to shake things up at some point, but unfortunately for the moment, it is highly dependent on which co-branded credit cards or transfer partners are offered in Canada.

Non-alliance: Southwest Airlines (Rapid Rewards)

I use Rapid Rewards when I fly U.S. to U.S. flights. It is also my favourite airline.

Oneworld: British Airways (Executive Club) and American Airlines (AAdvantage)

Executive Club and American Airlines are my top two picks. The reason is because there are many different opportunities to collect Executive Club Avios as a Canada and American Airlines has a transfer partnership with RBC Rewards.

Star Alliance: Air Canada (Aeroplan)

Aeroplan is probably the most widely accessible program in Canada and it is the easiest program to rack up the miles with as a Canadian. So they have become my default Star Alliance program.

SkyTeam: Delta Air Lines (Delta SkyMiles)

I do not usually fly with SkyTeam, so I picked Delta SkyMiles because their miles never expire, so it is the least maintenance for me.

Vanilla Alliance: None

If I was going to sign up for one program in this alliance, it would be Air Mauritius.

  1. US needs one alliance with all us based airlines for frequent flyer programs it would make it easier on consumer and share revenue among participants

  2. I think you are missing several Alliances.

    Specifically:
Etihad’s Alliances – now defunct used the Air Berlin system for point aggregation.

    Regional Alliances:
Value Alliance – no point sharing as yet
    UFLY Alliance – U-Rewards programme

    Please update your information

    Thanks
    Timothy
