American Express Increased Spending Requirements Across the Board
As you probably already know, American Express has been increasing its minimum spend requirement to fully qualify for sign up bonus for several of its charged and credit cards.
Note that if you are a business owner, you can also qualify for a higher than normal sign up bonus offer through our referral link. For today, I will be focusing on the personal cards only.
Below is a quick rundown of the changes. I ranked the credit cards card on the annual fees from lowest to highest.
American Express Air Miles Platinum Card
- $65 annual fee (first year fee waived)
- Earn 2,000 sign up bonus miles after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months
Previously $500 spending requirement.
American Express AeroplanPlus Gold
- $120 annual fee
- Earn 15,000 sign up bonus Aeroplan miles after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months
Previously $500 spending requirement.
American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card
- $120 annual fee
- Earn 20,000 bonus Starpoints after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months
Previously $500 spending requirement.
If you are curious, the business version increased from $1,000 to $1,500.
American Express Gold Rewards Card
- $150 annual fee (waived the first year)
- Earn 25,000 sign up Membership Rewards bonus points after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months
Previously $500 spending requirement.
American Express AeroplanPlus Platinum Card
- $499 annual fee
- Earn 50,000 sign up bonus Aeroplan miles after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months (if you sign up before March 29, 2017)
It is normally a 40,000 sign up bonus offer and it used to have a $1,000 spending requirement.
