[DISCONTINUED] Capital One Delta SkyMiles Credit Cards

Two more credit cards are being taken off the shelf. It is one again Capital One’s turn. They have discontinued the Delta SkyMiles Gold MasterCard and the Delta SkyMiles World MasterCard.

The highlights of each credit card were as follows:

Delta SkyMiles Gold MasterCard

  • No annual fee
  • No fee for supplementary cardholders
  • Earn 2,500 sign up bonus points after your first purchase
  • Earn 2 points for every $1 on Delta purchases
  • Earn 1 points for every $1 on all other purchases

Delta SkyMiles World MasterCard

  • $120 annual fee
  • No fee for supplementary cardholders
  • Earn 25,000 SkyMiles after spending $1,000 in the first 90 days of having this credit card
  • Earn 10,000 annual bonus miles when you spend at least $25,000 in one year (the year is counted on the anniversary of having this credit card)
  • Earn 3 SkyMiles for every $1 on Delta purchases
  • Earn 2 SkyMiles for every $1 on all other purchases

As bad is the SkyMiles program is, these two credit cards provided some competition to the co-branded airline credit cards available in Canada. With these two discontinuations, that leaves Alaska Airlines as the only United States airline still partnering up with any Canadian credit card company.

This is either bad news for consumers, as the competition continues to diminish, or it opens up the door to another airline. Either way, there have been so many changes to the Canadian credit card world in 2015 and we’re not even half way through the year.

  1. Annual fee is only part if the issue. Discontinuing a card with no compensation offered whatsoever to cardholders is bad business. Not nice.

  2. The letter I received said I would get the yearly fee refunded. My question is…… With over 6K spent on it, will I get the 10,000 mile bonus?

      1. I was told that refund will be pro rated for fee paid. Also if renewal was paid after July 1, there would be a full refund. Delta’s party line is that they are looking at other options for Canadians. I see no evidence of that so far, and October 20th. last day we can use our cards.

          1. Hi Steven, it really depends on what you want. American Express Gold Rewards card earns Membership Rewards that transfer to Delta SkyMiles, though not at the greatest ratio 1000:750.
