New Direction for Pointshogger

If you have not noticed already, over the past 12 months or so, Pointshogger has taken a different direction. So when we see comments like these:

… it reminds us that we should really update our readers on what is new!

New Direction

Changes to our lives has reduced the amount of time that has been spent on Pointshogger, which undoubtedly changed the style and frequency of posts. You may have noticed that we are posting less frequently and gone from analytical to more update-based posts. However, we are also always open to suggestions for post ideas. Feel free to leave a note in any of our comment sections.

Going forward, you will probably continue to see this trend of 10-15 posts per month (rather than 30+ previously), and more update based posts for the foreseeable future. The purpose of our posts is to provide insights for those who want to get started or want to play the rewards game within a manageable scale. Many people feel that the industry is very complicated, the aim of Pointshogger is to help simplify common misconceptions.

Another initiative that we are hoping to expand is promote up and coming blogs/websites with an interview so that you can share your ideas and aspirations with us! We understand (and can relate) that it is not easy to get things going, so we are more than happy to be one of your launching platforms. If you fall under this category, feel free to email us any time (using the Contact Us box towards the bottom of the page). Keep in mind that it does need to be travel and/or rewards (miles, points, cash back) related.

If your interests do not align with our content, then I am more than happy to redirect you to some of the other Canadian bloggers who have excellent content that may be more relevant to you.

The more established ones (who have been around for at least 3+ years) include:

Be on the lookout for the up and comers:

Hot Topic

Keep in mind that there is always a balance of what we share and do not share on our blog. This is why PointsU (interview) exists, so that you can learn the secrets in person. If you missed the last one, you won’t want to miss the next one!

Lastly, there can be a lot of debate when it comes this sensitive topic (i.e. maximizing miles and points). Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but always keep in mind that we have the option of closing our loyalty accounts and switching to cash back credit cards to reduce frustration.

Thank you for your Support

On a brighter note, for those of you who have continually supported us, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Without you, we may not necessarily have kept this blog going for as long as it has (just passed 4 years in October 2017)!

  1. you do a great job and whoever wrote that should probably reassess their own lives – you put yourself out there everyday – I doubt that person ever has – keep up the good work

  2. Hello Matt,

There will be haters as a famous shoe brand advertises !!
We thank you for guiding us in the game/hobbit of points and miles.

Also I would say that the industry has become more “Canadian” which means the ecosystem has become more consolidated as some products become too niche or not profitable enough.

Sometimes less is more so keep up the good work.. Sometimes your “simple” post are really helpful as it provides us a snapshot of products which some readers are not interested at all

  3. I’m grateful for this forum and I think you’re doing a great job. If “grimex” can do better, let’s see him’/her submit an article.
I was into points and called myself a Points Hog long before I found this forum. It’s great to get summaries and see the thoughts of other avid points collectors who I didn’t know exist.

  4. Hi Matthew. Yours is the first blog I ever read and I thank you for it. I’ve been collecting points/miles with no purpose other than collecting miles and figuring it out afterwards. You are the first one who taugh me to set up specific goals to ”my needs”, and not everybody’s definition of good ”redemption”. People are set on exceptional First class or business tickets because there is more value to it and that’s great but it’s okay to go for economy seats and make two or three travels if one is frugal and would prefer to stay in hostels rather than high end hotels. If anything, I would love it if you also gave advise for backpackers or the average Joe who does not travel with wife and kids.

  5. I wrote that. Sorry for hurting your feelings if I did. It comes from my desire to see more Canadian quality content about miles and points
