[REVIEW] Walmart Rewards MasterCard
If you’ve stepped into a Walmart recently, you were probably asked to sign up for their credit card. You probably even have an unfortunately story of how push the cashier was. Walmart in person experience aside, let’s take a more objective view of their credit cards to see if they are worthwhile.
Walmart Financial offers two versions of their cards, let’s take a look at the highlights first before the review.
Walmart Rewards Mastercard

- Earn $25 sign up bonus (earn $15 Welcome Bonus plus $10 Paperless Statement Bonus)
- Earn 1.25% cash back at any Walmart stores or walmart.ca purchases
- Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases
Walmart Rewards World Mastercard
- No annual fee
- Earn $25 sign up bonus (earn $15 Welcome Bonus plus $10 Paperless Statement Bonus)
- Earn 3% cash back on walmart.ca purchases
- Earn 1.25% cash back on gas and walmart.ca purchases
- Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases
- Have at least $100,000 in annual household income
Annual fee
Not have any annual fees makes things a lot simpler. We have nothing to lose to give the cards a try.
Sign up bonus
The $25 sign up bonus is broken down into 2 components. The first $15 is award within 5 business days of making 2 qualifying purchases:
- 1 purchase at a Walmart store in Canada or online at Walmart.ca
- 1 other purchase can be made at another location anywhere that Mastercard is accepted.
Note that both purchases must be made within 30 days of receiving the card.
While the additional $10 bonus is awarded within two statement periods after signing up for electronic statements.
Multiplier bonuses
The only competitive multiplier bonus is the 3% cash back on walmart.ca purchases. The 1.25% and 1.% for all other purchases is fairly standard for a no annual fee card. From this perspective, the best use of this card is really for online shopping.
Cash back
The cash back is credited against Walmart.ca and Canadian Walmart stores purchases only. The cash back cannot be redeemed for cash or anything other method.
There is also a minimum of $5 redemption requirement, as well as increments of $5 for anything above.
Thoughts
As mentioned above, this is a pretty standard no annual fee cash back credit card. But if you do make Walmart.ca purchases several times a year, I would definitely consider using this card for those purchases. To make it easy for yourself, the cash back would be credited against those purchases. The no annual fee make it an easy decision.
Furthermore, I would only use this credit card if you are not already getting at least 1.25% for all the other purchases.
With so many other cards offering 1.5% – 2%, I shake my head every time I see the signs at the local Walmart, promoting this card. Target has a credit card that offers 5% back. So does Lowes…
Definitely room for improvement for Walmart!
