Top Credit Cards for Purchasing Gas (updated January 31, 2022)
I cannot believe that it has been almost 7 years since I last updated this post. There is no question that this post can use an update, especially considering how much gas prices have gone up over the last 12 months in Canada.
The better strategy is still to purchase gas using a credit card to meet minimum spend requirements for new promotional sign up bonuses. Since we might not spend enough on gas to meet spend requirements, the other strategy would be to buy gas gift cards ahead of time (to meet minimum spend requirements), to be used at a later date.
However, today’s post is focused on the top day-to-day credit cards to use on gas spending, ranked by annual fees (lowest first). Only credit cards that offer at least a 4% or equivalent return specifically on gas purchases will be listed. That being said, you will notice that all of the cards below still have a limit on spending to attain higher than a 4% return.

American Express Air Miles Platinum card for filling up at any gas station.
That is a good one! I’ll add it to the list actually, very close to 4% return.
You forgot the Amex Cobalt card which now gets you 2 MR points for each $ spent.
That’s a good option, I was on the fence about that because the list was for a 4% return and above. I would have added it if it was 3 points per dollar instead. Thanks for the suggestion!
