Update on the Pickering Airport
A year and a half ago, we posted about the proposed Pickering Airport, north-east of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada. As you probably already know, airports are a hobby of mine, so I’ve been keeping an eye on the progress of the proposed airport to help alleviate the traffic at the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).
As of July, 2015, the federal government is now protecting the land and the surrounding area that would encompass the potential future airport. But there is still no definite decision on the development nor the timing of the airport. At least now we know that if they wanted to build one, they have the land to do so.
There is a lot of farmland surrounding the area, which will probably require some exappropriation. So there is no question that there will be a lot of opposition to building this airport.
This is going to be a tough decision, because the Toronto Pearson International Airport is only going to get busier, which may put more pressure to build this airport. It doesn’t help that the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) is not going to be able to expand for the time being. So I will be very curious to see this plays out.
Below is an imagine of the approximation of where the airport may be located.
