WestJet Status Match Challenge

WestJet Rewards is currently allowing Air Canada (Altitude) and Porter Airlines (VIPorter) elite status members to status match with its rewards program.

Looks like WestJet is aggressively trying to challenge Air Canada ahead of their full integration with Aeroplan in June 2020. Feels like they added Porter Airlines to balance things out. My question is, what about Canadian North’s Aurora Rewards? They have a program too.

The Benefit

Anyway, members can now achieve either Silver or Gold with WestJet Rewards that will run from now until March 31, 2020. You can extend the benefit period by completing additional challenges. Below are the details of the challenges.

Challenge 1

The first challenge runs from January 9 to 31, 2020. Members can receive either Gold or Silver status till March 31, 2020 by completing the following requirements:

• Submit first and last name
• Provide 9-digit WestJet Rewards ID
• Provide on email and phone number WestJet Rewards account
• Provide scanned copy or photo of top-tier membership card from Altitude and VIPorter (showing name, current status valid through to a minimum February 29, 2020)

Below is the equivalent conversions to WestJet Rewards:

• Receive Gold status match with:
  • Air Canada Altitude: 35K, 50K, 75K and 100K
  • Porter Airlines VIPorter: Priority
• Receive Silver status match with:
  • Air Canada Altitude: 25K
  • Porter Airlines VIPorter: Passport

To extend the benefit period, WestJet members need to complete Challenge 2 next.

Challenge 2

By completing the second challenge, the WestJet elite status will be extended to June 30, 2020 (an additional 90 days). There is only 1 requirement:

• Take at least 1 WestJet flight anywhere within the challenge period (January 9, 2020 to March 31, 2020)

To extend status even further, members can continue with Challenge 3.

Challenge 3

By completing the third challenge, the WestJet elite status will be extended an additional year to June 30, 2021. Below are the following requirements depending on the tier:

• Gold members reach a minimum qualifying spend of $2,500 (between the date of upgrade in Challenge 1 and June 30, 2020)
• Silver members reach a minimum qualifying spend of $1,500 (between the date of upgrade in Challenge 1 and June 30, 2020)

Thoughts on the Challenges

This is a fairly straightforward status match program. Granted it may seem like the elite status benefit period is short (based on Challenge 1), so I really like how WestJet included 2 additional challenges to extend the benefit period. It is a win/win situation for both WestJet (more passengers) and the member (longer benefit period).

This is a well done initiative in my books!
