[PROMOTION] 1,500 Sign up Bonus with the American Express Air Miles Platinum Credit Card (expired on June 30, 2014)
There is a 1,500 Air Miles sign up bonus points with the American Express Air Miles Platinum Credit Card. Below are the highlights of the credit card:
- $65 annual fee (waived the first year)
- Earn 1,500 sign up bonus points when you spend $500 in the first three months (apply before
June 30, 2014) - Earn 1 point for every $10 spent at Air Miles sponsors, groceries, gas and drug stores in Canada
- Earn 1 point for every $15 on all other purchases
Oddly enough, if you refer a friend, you can still get 500 points referral bonus, but your friend will only receive 1,250 sign up bonus points. So you are better off just signing up for yourself if you want the additional 250 points.
If you are a fan of collecting Air Miles, having this credit card, at least for the first year annual fee waived is no-brainer. The earning ratio is higher than the no annual fee Air Miles credit cards out there.
It is still difficult for me to get excited about Air Miles because of the expiry policy that they have implemented, which has been well documented in the blog. Essentially, Air Mile points expire 5 years after the date they were deposited. Furthermore, accounts also have to be active once every 24 months. So there are two expiry policies to be conscientious of. I recommend having a 12 month activity requirement and points never expiring like they had before.
Moreover, the number of points required to redeem for the same rewards have continually gone up. Conversely, the earning ratios with credit cards have not improved.
With the continuous devaluations and Air Miles’s expiry policies, I will not go out of my way to earn Air Miles.
