Aeroplan Expiry Policy Extended from 12 months to 18 months

Aeroplan initially paused Aeroplan miles expiry until July 14, 2020. When that came to an end, a few days later, on July 20, 2020, Aeroplan announced that it will be expanding its expiry policy from 12 months to 18 months. Basically miles continue to stay active as long as there is an activity, i.e. earn or redeem.

Since we are this topic, here is a quick recap of their current policies due to the pandemic. Also note that we have a page that is continually updated found on the menu bar called COVID-19 Updates.

Here are some of the current key highlights to watch for:

  • No cancellation fees for Aeroplan Flight Rewards for travel until August 31, 2020. Miles will be refunded, as well as any associated taxes, fees and surcharges.
  • No changes fees for Air Canada bookings made up to July 31, 2020 for original travel dates retroactive to March 1, 2020 until July 31, 2021. New trip must be taken by June 30, 2022.
  • Refundable tickets cancelled flights due to COVID-19 have the option of refunds.
  • Customers with non-refundable tickets making voluntary changes on tickets issued up to July 31, 2020, with an original travel date between March 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021 inclusive, have 2 options to choose from: Air Canada Travel Voucher (valid for 24 months) or Aeroplan Miles (with 65% bonus miles).
  • Altitude elite statuses held in 2020 (i.e. earned in 2019), will automatically be extended through the end of 2021.
  • Members can gift (done before December 31, 2020) their 2020 elite status to family or friend that will be valid through to 2021.

A couple other conditions to keep in mind:

  • Booking can be changed or cancelled up to 2 hours prior to departure.
  • Refundable tickets will be refunded as per the fare rules; a cancellation fee may still apply.
