COVID-19 Updates

Below are the current (date and time mentioned above) updates to solutions offered by frequent flyer, hotel and other retail loyalty programs to deal with any COVID-19 related matters mostly relevant to Canadians. We also included hyperlinks to the specific pages related to COVID within each respective websites for quicker access.

Since this post is continuously updated, older information is deleted. Air CanadaAeroplan

  • No cancellation fees for Aeroplan Flight Rewards for travel until October 16, 2020. Miles will be refunded, as well as any associated taxes, fees and surcharges.
  • No changes fees for Air Canada bookings made up to August 31, 2020 for original travel dates retroactive to March 1, 2020 until August 31, 2021. New trip must be taken by August 31, 2022.
  • Refundable tickets cancelled flights due to COVID-19 have the option of refunds.
  • Customers with non-refundable tickets making voluntary changes on tickets issued up to August 31, 2020, with an original travel date between March 1, 2020 and August 30, 2021 inclusive, have 2 options to choose from: Air Canada Travel Voucher (valid for 24 months) or Aeroplan Miles (with 65% bonus miles).
  • Altitude elite statuses held in 2020 (i.e. earned in 2019), will automatically be extended through the end of 2021.
  • Members can gift (done before December 31, 2020) their 2020 elite status to family or friend that will be valid through to 2021.

Air Miles 

  • No change fees for flights up to August 31, 2020.
  • No cancellation fee for hotel bookings up to August 31, 2020, if cancelled between 5-14 days before the check-in date.
  • Miles expiry is extended by 2 months from the regular 24 months of inactivity.
  • Elite status members will have their current status (i.e. earned from 2019) extended until December 31, 2021.

Air North

  • One-time $0 fee waiver for cancellation and change fees for all bookings made prior to July 31, 2020. Modifications to itineraries must be made at least 24 hours prior to scheduled departure.
  • Fare difference applies if the new booking is at a higher fare than the original fare purchased (no refund or credit will be given if the new fare is lower than the original fare purchased)
  • All cancellations will be processed as customer credit valid for 2 years from original travel date.
  • Extension for all unused segments on 2019 Aurora Air Passes for travel until November 30, 2020.

Air Transat

  • No refunds are being issues since it is now business as usual.
  • Credits for the value of cancelled flight/package with no expiry date. Credit is fully transferable and any residual credit will remain on file.

Alaska Airlines

  • No cancellation or change fee for travel through December 31, 2020 for tickets booked on or before February 26, 2020.
  • No cancellation or change fee for tickets purchased between February 27, 2020 and September 8, 2020 for travel through August 8, 2021.
  • In both cases, passengers will receive a credit certificate for future travel, but new travel must be completed within one year from the original travel date.
  • Current Mileage Plan elite statuses will be extended through December 31, 2021.

American Airlines

  • No change fee for travel through September 30, 2020. New travel must be completed before December 31, 2021 and pay the fare difference.
  • No change fee for tickets booked by September 8, 2020, for travel from October 1, 2020 and later.
  • Elite status for AAdvantage members automatically extended until January 31, 2022.

Best Western

  • Flexible cancellation policy. Check individual booking for detail.
  • Members who were downgraded a tier at the end of 2019 were upgraded back to their previous tier and will maintain that status through January 31, 2022 without needing to fulfil the necessary qualifications.

British Airways

  • No change fee for travel before August 31, 2020, to be rebooked for departure dates up to April 30, 2021.
  • For cancelled flights, vouchers will be given which are valid till April 30, 2022 from the original departure date of the first booking.

Canadian North

  • No change or cancellation fee for flights before October 31, 2020 regardless of fare type.
  • For non-refundable fares, the refund will be issued as a travel credit voucher that will be valid until December 31, 2021 from date of issue.
  • Extension of Aurora Concierge benefits member status period through March 31, 2022.

Cathay Pacific

Choice Hotels

  • No changes or cancellation fees for all bookings, if changed or cancelled 24 hours prior to arrival for stays before September 30, 2020.
  • Points expiry paused until December 31, 2020.

Cineplex

Delta Air Lines

  • No change fees or cancellation fees for travel before July 31, 2020. Can re-book for travel using the flight credits through September 30, 2022.
  • No change fee for tickets purchased between March 1, 2020 and July 31, 2020 for a year from the date it was purchased it.
  • All existing 2020 Medallion statuses are automatically extended through the end of 2021.
  • All Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) from 2020 are being rolled over to 2021 to qualify for 2022 Medallion status.

Flair Airlines

Greyhound Canada

  • No change fees, but new travel must be made before December 31, 2020.
  • No cancellation fees. If travel dates are unknown, passengers will receive an eVoucher for the value of the ticket to be redeemed 1 year of issue date.
  • Any changes or cancellations must be made at least 1 day prior to scheduled departure.

Hilton

  • No cancellation or change fees for all bookings (even those described as non-cancellable) made at least 24 hours before arrival for all stays up to August 31, 2020.
  • All elite statuses earned in 2019 that were scheduled to be downgraded on March 31, 2020 were automatically extended to March 31, 2021.
  • The 2020 elite statuses will be extended to March 31, 2022.
  • Expiration of all points are paused until December 31, 2020.

Hyatt

  • Business as usual for changes and cancellations.
  • Current elite statuses (i.e. earned in 2019) expiring on February 28, 2021 will automatically be extended to February 28, 2022.
  • Expiration of points are suspended from forfeiture through December 31, 2020.

IHG Hotels and Resorts

  • No change or cancellation fees for existing bookings made prior to April 6, 2020 for stays up to August 31, 2020.
  • For stays booked after April 6, 2020, be sure to check individual booking cancellation options.
  • Current elite statuses (i.e. earned in 2019) will be automatically extended through January 31, 2022.
  • Points never expire for all members with Elite status members, for everyone else, points expiry are paused until December 31, 2020.

Marriott Hotels and Resorts

  • No cancellation or change fees for all bookings (including reservations with pre-paid rates) made at least 24 hours before arrival for all stays up to September 30, 2020.
  • Current elite statuses (i.e. earned in 2019) will be extended to February 2022.
  • Points expiration are paused until February 2021. At that time, points will only expire if an account has been inactive for at least 24 months.

Porter Airlines

  • All flights cancelled until October 7, 2020.
  • Passenger who have cancelled flights will be contacted within five days and advised of their travel options.
  • One time fee waiver for change to travel within the next 12 months. Changes need to be made more than 24 hours before travel date.
  • No cancellation fee, no refund, but a travel credit will be issued and must be used within 12 months of the original booking date
  • Points that are set to expire between March 19 and December 31, 2020 will be reinstated and extended until December 31, 2021.
  • VIPorter premium members will automatically have their current status extended until December 31, 2021.

Sunwing

  • All flights suspended between until August 31, 2020.
  • No cancellation fees. Cancelled flights will be issued travel credits for departures.
  • No action needed as the original booking number is the code to use for future travel credit.
  • For original departure dates between March 17, 2020 and May 31, 2020 are redeemable up to June 20, 2022.
  • For original departure dates June 1, 2020 and August 31 2020, are redeemable up to August 31, 2022.

United Airlines

VIA Rail

  • Full refund and no cancellation fee for all travel through November 1, 2020.

WestJet

  • One-time change fee waiver for all flights booked before March 3, 2020 (for travel between March 3, 2020 – January 31, 2021) must be made at least 2 hours before departure.
  • One-time change fee waiver for all flights booked between March 3, 2020 and July 31, 2020 (for travel between March 3, 2020 – March 12, 2021) must be made at least 24 hours before departure.
  • If a flight refund is requested, passengers will receive a travel credit in the form of a Travel Bank, valid for 24 months from the date of issuance.
