Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for February 2018

We are back again with our monthly update on the first year fee waived credit cards list. Seems like the current trend is that most first year fee waivers are with fixed rewards or cash back. I really hope that this trend will shift at some point to see more airline and hotel (miles and points) promotions instead.

Note that we also have two other types of monthly lists going on:

If you would like to see other lists as well, please let us know in the comment section below.

Permanent Offers

These are credit cards do not specify that there is an end date, nor is there a limited time mentioned. For the time being, they appear to be permanent, but as you may have seen with other cards, this can change at any moment without notice. One unfortunately thing is that this list is becoming very short.

  • Earn $25 cash back sign up bonus

American Express Business Gold Rewards Card

  • $250 annual fee (first year fee waived)
  • Earn 30,000 sign up bonus points after spending $5,000 in the first 3 months
  • Earn 1 point for every $1 spent on all purchases
  • Earn 1 additional point for every $1 spent at 3 suppliers of your choice to a maximum of 250,000 additional points each calendar year

  1. Hi Matthew (or do you prefer Matt?), thanks for the Feb update!

fyi, TD 1st Class Travel Infinite Visa Offer (apply via March 1st): Welcome Bonus of 20,000 TD Points when you make your first Purchase with your Card Plus 30,000 TD Points when you spend $1,000 within 90 days of approval.

btw, just discovered your points calculator … love it!

      1. Hi Matthew. I was just looking into the current promotion for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card and I don’t see any mention of the minimum spend requirement to qualify for the bonus TD points promotion.
        Thanks… love your site!

          1. Upon clicking the “1”: 1 Welcome Bonus of 20,000 TD Points will be awarded to the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card Account only after the first Purchase is made on the Account. To receive the additional 30,000 TD Points, you must keep your Account open, active and in good standing for 90 days after Account opening. If you have opened an Account in the last 6 months, you will not be eligible for this offer.

  2. One frustrating problem is understanding the value of the points, when dealing with travel. For example, TD 1st Class Travel seems to be 1 point == 0.5 cent fixed redemption. 1 BMO point seems to be 1 cent. 1 MBNA point also seems to be 1 cent.

So hypothetical 30K points bonus from BMO ($300) is stronger then 50K ($250) bonus from TD First Class, however with BMO you get 1 point per dollar spend (1% cashback equivalent), and with TD you get 3 points per dollar spend (1.5% cashback)…

My mom had MBNA rewards MC for years, I finally set up online account for her (she was paying the paper invoice in the bank), and she over the few years accumulated has 29K points – 290 CAD. Were she collecting Aeroplan, she could have flown to Atlanta twice on points on the same spend…

And then I look at the fact that a return ticket to Japan in coach costs ~1200 – 1500 CAD depending on the season, and realize that I will never reach the necessary number of points on spend to get that, unless I collect Aeroplan/Avios.
