Current Airport Expansion Projects

As you may have noticed, talking about airports is a big hobby of mine. Some people dread going to the airport, because of all the obstacles that we may have to go through, but I find it fun. I guess for me, being at the airport means I get to travel, so I associate an airport to something positive.

What I find exciting is new construction and expansion projects happening at airports. Below is a list of expansion projects at some of the major airports:

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)

Terminal 1 Station is under construction to serve the future Union Pearson Express, which is expected to begin service before the 2015 Pan American Games. This should help the transportation to and from the airport, which has been known to be an issue considering how far it is from a major transportation hub.

Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

The Vancouver International Airport Authority has developed a 2007-2027 Master Plan. The airport is also in the process of major repairs to several of its runways.

Calgary International Airport (YYC)

There will be a new International Terminal in 2016, which will more than double the size of the existing terminal building. There will be an additional 22 new aircraft gates for international and U.S. flights. This is an exciting new project for Calgary and I will definitely help accommodate more passengers as the city continues to grow rapidly.

Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL)

The Dorval interchange is probably the most visible ongoing reconstruction project happening, but it projected to be completed in 2017.

Edmonton International Airport (EIA)

The airport intends to add a third runway to the airport by 2025 as part of its draft master plan.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ)

The airport is working on upgrading the roadway system to improve traffic safety, reduce congestion and increase the road network capacity. The work should be completed sometime in 2015.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ)

The is a pedestrian tunnel construction that began in March 2012 and is expected to be completed in late spring 2015. The tunnel will have four moving side-walks travelling at 2.3 kilometres per hour. There will be 6 elevators on the mainland side, travellers will descend 100-feet to access the tunnel and travel along the passageway to escalators, which lead to the airport’s check-in area. The complete journey should take about six minutes. This seems like an amazing project, glad it is almost done!

Kelowna International Airport (YLW)

In April 2015, the airport started multiple constriction projects that will last the next 4 – 5 years, which include:

• Outbound Baggage Hall expansion (affecting the airline office, concourse)
• Apron Expansion
• Departure Lounge upgrades
• Airport Plaza

St. John’s International Airport (YYT)

The Airport Authority is drafting a 10-year Expansion and Improvement Plan, which includes an Airport Terminal Building expansion that commenced in 2014. The airport expects a lot of growth in the coming years, so they want to be ready for the increased traffic.
