More Warnings of Stricter Canadian Travel Restrictions
We wrote up a post yesterday mentioning that the government is issuing warnings on the media that they may implement stricter travel restrictions. At the very least, they admit that it is being considered.
In my post, I mentioned that if the government “warns” us, chances are they will actually do it. They are just bracing us for the eventual news. I just wanted to mention a few reasons why I feel that more travel restrictions are coming.
Not enough heads up last time
I suspect that part of this heads up was due to the backlash that happened when they implemented the 72-hour negative Covid-19 test prior to returning to Canada. The main complaint was that there was not enough fair warning (from passengers and airlines alike).
The reverse argument is that people wish that the rule was implemented sooner.
143 cases on flights in 2 weeks
CBC reported yesterday that a total of 143 international flights with confirmed COVID-19 cases have landed in Canada in past two weeks (information taken from Public Health Agency of Canada).
This number is being very closely monitored. That’s a fairly high amount of cases if the 72-hour negative test rule was implemented back on January 7, 2021. How are people getting on a flight when they are tested positive anyway? Shouldn’t we be at 0 cases with the new rule in place?
Opposition parties agreeing with each other
Even opposition and provincial leaders (from all different parties) are calling for more travel restrictions. I’m not sure how it is in other countries, but I am going to assume that it’s rare for all parties agree on something.
So if there is that much agreement across the board, it increases the chances that additional restrictions are going to happen at some point.
Closing thoughts
I do not know if new travel restrictions are a done deal. But there are a lot of factors pointing to yes, details just need to be worked out.
That being said, the reason we are posting today is because even though we are a travel blog and we would like to get back to writing about more fun stuff, we are prioritising safety first. When we mean safety, yes, part of it is being safe from the illness, but also we hope that no one ends up stranded somewhere that they do not want to.
At this point, it really is travel at your own risk. So whatever you decide to do, please be safe and be prepared for anything that may come up. I would not count if things going as planned if you have to leave the country.
