Top Credit Cards for Purchasing Gas (updated June 20, 2015)

With several updates to the credit card scene and gas prices slowly creeping back up, now is as good as time as any to update the top credit cards list for gas purchases.

Keep in mind that some credit cards give a good return for a certain period of time (e.g. first 6 months of having the credit card), and then you are better off switching to another credit card if you want to maintain a high return.

American Express SimplyCash Preferred Card

• $79 annual fee
• Earn 5% cash back on all purchases (for the first 6 months) (up to $400 cash back)

American Express SimplyCash Card 

• No annual fee
• Earn 5% cash back for every $1 spent at gas stations (up to $250 cash back for the first 6 months)

MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus MasterCard

• No annual fee
• Earn 5% cash back spent at gas stations (within the first 6 months)

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card

• $99 annual fee
• Earn 4 points for every $1 spent at gas stations

Scotiabank American Express Platinum Card

• $399 annual fee
• Earn 4 points for every $1 spent at gas stations

Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card

• $99 annual fee (waived the first year if you apply before June 30, 2015)
• Earn 4% cash back for every $1 spent at gas stations

Capital One Platinum MasterCard

• No annual fee
• Exclusive for Costco members
• Earn 4% cash back for every $1 spent at gas stations (within the first 3 months)

American Express Gold Rewards Card

• $150 annual fee (waived the first year)
