Over 2 Billion Points for Lawsuit Settlement

A class action lawsuit was brought against Shoppers Drug Mart (Pharmaprix in Quebec) by 1.4 million members in the province of Quebec back in 2010, when Shoppers Optimum devalued its reward redemption. It took 7 years to finally come to a settle worth over 2 billion points, which is worth over $4 million.

With this win by the members, I wonder if Shoppers Optimum is going to think twice before devaluing their program again. To be fair, they will have to find a way to keep up with inflation, so I am curious what their next move is when they make another change to their reward program.

Currently there are no co-branded credit cards associated with Shoppers Optimum. You currently earn 10 points for every $1 spent before taxes (along with other exceptions more commonly: gift cards others thank Shoppers Drug Mart, prepaid card products, wireless phone cards, stamps, passport photos, bus tickets and passes, cigarettes and tobacco, lottery tickets, prescriptions drugs, etc.). The reward redemption schedule is as follows:

  • 8,000 points = $10
  • 22,000 points = $30
  • 38,000 points = $60
  • 50,000 points = $85
  • 95,000 points = $170

Let us know in the comment section below if you actually received points as part of the settlement. I am curious how they will pay out!
