Top Credit Card for Purchasing Groceries (updated on June 21, 2015)

I’m not sure which part of the country that you live in, but wherever I go, I feel that my grocery bill consistently grows, regardless of how hard I try to find things on discount. Seeing as food is a necessity, it is certain that it is a big chuck of our monthly bills. Therefore, it is very useful to have a solid credit card that gives us a great return for grocery purchases. Below is a list of the top credit cards, also not that some of the credit card as more valuable only for the first few months before moving on to something else:

American Express SimplyCash Preferred Card

  • $79 annual fee
  • Earn 5% cash back on all purchases (for the first 6 months) (up to $400 cash back)

American Express SimplyCash Card 

  • No annual fee
  • Earn 5% cash back for every $1 spent on grocery store purchases (up to $250 cash back for the first 6 months)

MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus MasterCard

  • No annual fee
  • Earn 5% cash back spent on grocery store purchases (within the first 6 months)

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card

  • $99 annual fee
  • Earn 4 points for every $1 spent on grocery store purchases

Scotiabank American Express Platinum Card

  • $399 annual fee
  • Earn 4 points for every $1 spent on grocery store purchases

Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card

  • $99 annual fee (waived the first year if you apply before June 30, 2015)
  • Earn 4% cash back for every $1 spent on grocery store purchases

American Express Gold Rewards Card

  • $150 annual fee (waived the first year)
  • Earn 2 points for every $1 spent on grocery store purchases

    For American Express cards, the fine print says “Purchases do not include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents.” Do you know if gift cards bought at supermarkets are considered as “cash equivalents”? Thanks.

    1. I do not believe gift cards are cash equivalents. Personally, I have bought gift cards at drug stores and received the 2 points per $1 spent on gift cards with my American Express Gold Rewards Card.
