Walmart Not Dropping Visa Afterall

It has been a dispute for months, Walmart getting ready to stop accepting Visa credit cards at their stores in Canada. They already stopped in city of Thunder Bay and the entire province of Manitoba.

But now, an agreement has been reached between the two companies to continue accepting Visa credit cards at their stores across the country. The details of the agreement has not been released.

I am uncertain how I feel about this turn of events. Part of me was actually hoping that they would actually discontinue the partnership to put pressure on Visa. I really thought Walmart was going to give priority to MasterCard, considering that they have a credit card with them.

Conversely, by bringing Visa back, hopefully it puts pressure on Walmart Financial to improve its product, though I am not holding my breathe on that.

  1. From an entirely different perspective, I am very glad that Visa will continue to be accepted. I’m in New York and drive to Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes for vacation, but do not have a Mastercard. The way I read the proposed rules made it seem like my Visa’s wouldn’t be accepted at all, even the debit cards, and truthfully getting Canadian cash, even in NY, isn’t very easy. Not that I go to Canada just to go to Walmart lol, but a stop there is almost always inevitable on any vacation.

    1. Glad this move benefits you! Keep in mind that AMEX would still be accepted. And you can always get the cash after you get into Canada! Funny enough, I always stop at Walmart in the U.S. 🙂
