Credit Cards for Newcomers and Students

Newcomers to Canada and students are in a very similar situation where they have minimal to no credit history. So they have to start somewhere. There are several ways to get started. This is how I got started. I walked into a bank, locked in a some money into a guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) and was issued a secure credit card. At the time, I was given the CIBC Shoppers Optimum Visa (has since been discontinued). I used this opportunity to start building my credit history.

Top Credit Card Higher than Normal Sign Up Bonuses for August 2016

The list has really trimmed down for this month. I really hope that it picks back up as we lead into the fall. That being said, 2016 has been a pretty good year for credit card sign up bonuses, so we were due for a break month. I expect that things will pick back up in the fall, as companies will want to close out the year strong.

Minor Improvement to the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card

The American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card (Canadian version) has been slightly upgraded. Originally, there was a $50 annual fee for supplementary cardholders, which now waives its first year fee. Not an earth-shattering move, but it should make it a no-brainer to at least add the supplementary cardholder at least for the first year.

Top Credit Card for Purchasing Groceries (updated on June 26, 2016)

It has been exactly one year since I last updated this list. And it doesn’t seem like groceries have declined much since. Seems more like the prices continue to climb. So I thought I’d update the list of top credit cards to use on groceries.

American Express Referral Bonuses (Updated May 21, 2016)

The way a referral bonus works is that you refer a family or friend to the same credit card (or a credit card within the same family), and then you qualify for a referral bonus offer. I thought I’d update the American Express Canada referral bonuses, as there are several significant changes from the last time I updated this list. Last time I wrote the word “remaining” in the title. For the time being, it seems like the referrals bonuses are here to stay, so I will take the word off.
