[REVIEW] Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard
Rogers Bank has really stepped up their game over the past couple of years to offer a couple of competitive credit cards. Today, we are writing a review of the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard since the new changes came into effect on April 9, 2024 that puts it more on par with the benefits of their existing Rogers Mastercard.
Highlights
Highlights of the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard card:
- No annual fee
- Earn 3% unlimited cash back on all eligible purchases made in U.S. dollars
- Earn 2% unlimited cash back on all eligible non-U.S. dollar purchases for having 1 qualifying service with Rogers, Fido or Shaw (otherwise, 1.5% cash back)
- Received 5 Roam Like Home days at no cost every year for Rogers mobile plans
- Receive 1.5x bonus cash back every time you redeem for Rogers, Fido or Shaw purchases
- Receive complimentary membership to Mastercard Travel Pass provided by DragonPass (pay $32 USD per person per visit)
- Minimum income requirement of $80,000 annual personal income or $150,000 annual household income
Just for comparison’s sake, I also included the highlight of the Rogers Mastercard.
- No annual fee
- Earn $60 cash back when making a mobile wallet purchase within the first 90 days and 6 automatic payments within the first 8 months for Rogers, Fido or Shaw postpaid service
- Earn 2% unlimited cash back on all purchases for having 1 qualifying service with Rogers, Fido or Shaw (otherwise 1% cash back)
- Receive 5 Roam Like Home days at no cost every year for Rogers mobile plans
- Receive 1.5x bonus cash back every time you redeem for Rogers, Fido or Shaw purchases
- No income requirement
Thoughts
I feel like the highlights pretty much speak for itself. The no annual fee makes either card a no brainer for Rogers, Fido or Shaw service customers. At the very least, most people can qualify for the more basic Mastercard version due to no income requirement (credit check still required). For the higher income earners, then definitely the Red version.
I really love the 5 free Roam Like Home feature. I’ve used it up already this past year as it really came in handy. The 1.5x bonus is such a sweetener, making this generally my primary credit card for every day spending (when I am not meeting spending requirements for bonuses on other cards).
I am really glad that Rogers Bank stepped up their game big time. On the one hand, some have argue that the few telecom companies in the Canadian industry (primarily Internet and wireless services) control too much of the market share leaving little room for the smaller competitors, which makes them controversial. Though cable TV did take a hit. On the other hand, Roger’s Bank is one of those little guys in the credit card market that really contribute to the credit card competition. It might not be a 50/50 trade off to some, but I must admit that I rather them as an up and coming in the credit card market than none existent.
