Ranking the Credit Card Portfolios of Each Canadian Financial Institutions (updated December 1, 2020)

It has been 8 months since our last update. Can you believe it, 8 months ago we were already dealing with lockdowns.

Suffice to say, there has been some major changes to the industry since then, namely, Capital One slowly shutting things down, along with Aeroplan’s launch of new co-branded cards. Even so, you will notice most of the ranking changes from the middle to the end of the list.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for October 2020

Several offers ending (see October 2020 and November 2020 cards) on this list that would not make it to next month’s list. So if you are thinking about a specific offer, you may want to go for it now.

Keep in mind that this post refers to temporary offers. We also have an ongoingly updated Top Credit Cards pages that includes permanent first year fee waived offers too. Here are some of the more relevant ones that are more related to this post:

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for September 2020

Several changes to this month’s list. HSBC is back on track with even bigger bonuses than before. TD upgraded their offers. While Brim is extended its offer another month.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for August 2020

Some minor changes to this month’s list. HSBC cards have been taken off as they expired a week ago or so. The TD cards are next up. They will not make it to next month’s list. So if you are thinking about those cards, I would go for them. While Brim extended their offer another month, so you have a few more days left to take advantage.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for July 2020

This month’s list has really trimmed down with CIBC now offering more permanent first year fee waived offers. Because of that, I have also taken off the ongoing first year fee waived offers as that list grew too long.

Keep in mind that we have an ongoingly updated Top Credit Cards pages. Here are some of the more relevant ones to this post:

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for June 2020

There were a few minor changes (mostly tweaks to the TD offers) from last month, along with a notable promotional extension. The Brim World Elite MasterCard extended its first year fee waiver off $199 annual fee another month (was also extended last month) to June 30, 2020. So same thing I said last month, if you missed your chance last month, this is your opportunity. There is no way to guarantee that the promotion will be extended again, but it could.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for May 2020

There were few changes to this month’s list, aside from offer extensions. For example, the Brim World Elite MasterCard extended its first year fee waiver off $199 annual fee till May 31, 2020, so if you missed your chance last month, this is your opportunity. I highlight this card because it is rare to see a credit card with such a high annual fee be waived.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for April 2020

The card that I would like to highlight for this month is the Brim World Elite MasterCard, which is waiving its $199 annual fee. This might be the highest public offer annual fee waiver I’ve ever seen. The promotion expires on April 30, 2020, so if you are thinking about getting the card, do not think too long about.

Ongoing First Year Fee Waived Offers

The reason I post a separate list of ongoing offers (i.e. not temporary) is because there are  up is that there are 2 permanent first year fee waived offers. So they are worthy of being highlighted. Meridian Bank is the only company willing to do this at the moment. Every other company has first year fee waived offers during a specific promotion period.

Ranking the Credit Card Portfolios of Each Canadian Financial Institutions (updated April 1, 2020)

It has been almost a year since we last updated this post, so no question this was due for an update. The reason why I waited so long is because there are very few changes to the rankings since then. However, there was a sufficient amount of changes to the industry to warrant an update. Most of the ranking movement occurred in the bottom third of the list. Furthermore, another common theme on this list is that the gap widen between some of the positions.

Every time I update the rankings, I have an overall theme throughout the post. For today’s post, the focus was on internal changes made by each financial institution which justify their position in the rankings.

Credit Cards that Waive Foreign Fees (updated September 27, 2019)

It has been over a year and a half since I last updated this post, I thought it was due for an update, as there were several changes in the industry. I am going to change this post a little from last time. In the post, I wrote about the Rogers Bank cards that gave a higher multiplier bonus for foreign purchases. But going forward, my post will focus only on cards who waive foreign transaction fees.
