[AIRPORT] Expansion and Renovation Projects

We previously wrote about a few airport renovations in Canada’s major airports. It is always exciting to see airport expansion projects because it gives passengers more options on available flights; thus, increasing the competition.

Below are a few other exciting expansion and renovation projects going on across the country.

Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB)

The airport is working on the second phase of an expansion project to its terminal which will cost around $300 million. Presently the terminal has 13 gates, which should be increased to 16 gates by 2015, and hopefully 24 by 2025. The work will also include an expansion of the international facilities, construction work on the runways, taxiways and de-icing pads, as well as enhancements to customer service facilities.

Fort McMurray Airport (YMM)

The airport’s passenger traffic grew by 22.3% from 2012 to 2013, so a significant expansion is definitely needed to accommodate the continued growth. A new terminal is being built, which is set to open in June 2014. The new terminal will include 15 brand name retail and food/beverage outlets (including Earls, Famoso Pizzeria, Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Jugo Juice, Mary Brown’s Famous Chicken, Burger King and Subway). The airport is also adding 2,200 new parking stalls, 4 aircraft bridges and 8 aircraft parking stands.

Iqaluit Airport (YFB)

The Nunavut government is overhauling the airport which is expected to cost between $250 and $300 million. Upgrades include: a new terminal, retrofitting the current terminal, expanding parking lots, a second taxiway and apron and repaving the 2700-metre runway. The construction is expected to begin this year (2014) and completed by 2017.
