[AIRPORT] Major Airport Renovations
Growing up, I’ve always liked to see construction, development and expansion. Here’s an update on some interesting airport construction projects and renovations happening at the larger airports across the country.
Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
The Toronto Pearson International Airport is improving its transportation in time for the 2015 Pan American Games. The Union Pearson Express is under construction, which will be a rail link connection between Union Station in downtown Toronto and the airport (Terminal 1 Station). The project will cost approximately $456 million CDN.
Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
The Vancouver International Airport already went through significant upgrades in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics. So now they are focusing on improving safety and efficiency with the Airside Operations Facility, slated for completion in October 2014. The building will be a central hub of operations and maintenance.
Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL)
The Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport has been going through extensive renovations for the past few years. Phase II of the international jetty expansion project will be getting underway in 2014. The project will add a total of six new contact gates for wide-body jets (including two for A-380s), stylish lounges, shops, bars and restaurants. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2016.
Furthermore, the Dorval interchange is being reconstructed for more direct road links between the airport and highways 20 and 520. The project is targeting a 2017 end date.
Calgary International Airport (YYC)
The Calgary International Airport is building a new International Terminal that will have 22 new gates, including two gates to accommodate an Airbus A380. The project is aiming for an October 2015 completion.
The airport is also building a new Runway between the Air Terminal Building and 36 Street NE. Construction is scheduled to completed in May 2014.
Edmonton International Airport (YEG)
Construction of a new control tower is underway.
Construction of an eight-storey, 213-room Courtyard Marriott adjacent to the north terminal began is expected to be completed in the spring of 2014.
Ottawa/Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW)
The Ottawa Airport is on the third and final phase (to be completed in summer of 2014) of resurfacing its runways. The project includes: the removal of the surface layer of asphalt from the runway; replacement of runway lighting and electrical wires; as well as regrading and repaving.
