Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for January 2021

The industry seems to go in ups and downs. There was a period of time where first year fee waived cards were far and few in between. At the moment, there are quite a few cards with first year fee waived offers.

Also note that we are only listing credit cards that have limited time offers and not ones that have an indefinite first year fee waived offer, like some of the CIBC cards.

Ranking the Credit Card Portfolios of Each Canadian Financial Institutions (updated December 1, 2020)

It has been 8 months since our last update. Can you believe it, 8 months ago we were already dealing with lockdowns.

Suffice to say, there has been some major changes to the industry since then, namely, Capital One slowly shutting things down, along with Aeroplan’s launch of new co-branded cards. Even so, you will notice most of the ranking changes from the middle to the end of the list.

Ranking the Credit Card Portfolios of Each Canadian Financial Institutions (updated April 1, 2020)

It has been almost a year since we last updated this post, so no question this was due for an update. The reason why I waited so long is because there are very few changes to the rankings since then. However, there was a sufficient amount of changes to the industry to warrant an update. Most of the ranking movement occurred in the bottom third of the list. Furthermore, another common theme on this list is that the gap widen between some of the positions.

Every time I update the rankings, I have an overall theme throughout the post. For today’s post, the focus was on internal changes made by each financial institution which justify their position in the rankings.

Top Cash Back Credit Card Offers for February 2020

Quite a few promotions will be ending on this list (end of February or early March) before it makes it to our next list. So if you have a card in mind, now’s the time to get it.

Note that this post focuses on temporary offers. Our Top Cash Back Credit Cards page continues to list current offers that are not exclusive to limited time offers like this post.

Highlights

For this month’s list, I would look at the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card, which continues to be the top credit card offer with its 10% cash back welcome offer, along with the first year fee waived. The Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card changed up its sign up bonus to $250 cash, which is very high for a no annual fee card actually.

On a minor note, Laurentian Bank Visa Dollars is offering a competitive first year fee waived and 8% cash back bonus that Laurentian Bank customers may want to consider.

Top Cash Back Credit Card Offers for January 2020

A new year means we should expect some new offers. But for now, most offers are rolling over or extended (namely National Bank) from 2019. Most offers are expiring at the end of March.

Note that this post focuses on temporary offers. Our Top Cash Back Credit Cards page continues to list current offers that are not exclusive to limited time offers like this post.

Highlights

The biggest change to the list is the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card coming back with its 10% cash back welcome offer, along with the first year fee waived. The TD Cash Back Visa Infinite Card extended its matching introductory offer, but has a weaker normal earning ratio than the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card.

Top Cash Back Credit Card Offers for November 2019

Many offers expired at the end of October, so November is mostly a fresh month with many new offers that were either extended or changed up. You will even notice some offers that were supposed to end in November that got preemptively extended.

Top Cash Back Credit Card Offers for October 2019

You will notice for this month’s list, there are quite a few promotional offers that finish at month end. So if you are interested in something, now would be the time to jump on the offers. There is no way to know what will happen come November 1, 2019. Some offers can be extended (e.g. TD cash back offer from last month), terminated or changed something else.

I have split the list into two categories. One with a limited time (but no end date offer) and another one with a limited time offer.

Top Cash Back Credit Card Offers for September 2019

For September’s list, quite a few National Bank credit card offers have been added to the list. Only one offer is expiring before the end of the month, otherwise most offers run until the end of October.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for May 2019

All the major TD promotions will be expiring (June 2, 2019) before the next monthly list comes out. Personally, I doubt that they will extend the promotions, they may be offering something else. So if you have been thinking about one of their cards, I would go for it sooner rather than later. I personally signed up for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card as I could use an Aeroplan restock.

Ranking the Credit Card Portfolios of Each Canadian Financial Institutions (updated May 1, 2019)

I have been debating how often I should update this post. I decided on 6 months, and it has been the latest trend anyway. There has been several changes (though mostly in the bottom half of the rankings) to the industry in that period of time to warrant an update anyway. Most significantly, it was time to include Brim Financial and Cuets.Every time I write up an update, I generally try to have a theme throughout the post. This time around, I am going to emphasis more on the gap between the rankings.Below are my personal rankings of each company, along with a commentary and a list of some of my top credit card picks for each financial institution.
