Ranking the Credit Card Portfolios of Each Canadian Financial Institutions (updated December 21, 2021)

It has been just over a year since our last update (December 1, 2020) of the rankings list. The timing works well to update again this month, since we are coming to the end of the year. Now we get a snapshot of 2021, as we head into 2022.

The RBC offers ended last month, but were extended to April 2022. That being said, several TD offers expire today. So if you have been thinking about these offers, today is the day to go for it.

Furthermore, the National Bank offers are expiring before the end of the month.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for November 2021

For this month, one different change is that the Brim card pushed its deadline to December 31, 2021. What is different than before is that they would extend their promotion period by 1 month at a time only. This time, they pushed it by 2 months.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for October 2021

For this month, some minor changes, including HSBC coming up with a new offer that runs until the end of January 2022. All of the BMO and Scotiabank offers have already been extended, so they will not be coming to an end as quickly as mentioned in last month’s list. That leaves only Laurentian and Brim cards expiring this month. Granted, Brim continues to extend their offer one month at a time. It has been going on for over a year now.

For this month’s list, several BMO promotions are about to expire. They usually either extend their promotions or offer something different. So if you have been contemplating any of those cards at their current offers, now is the time to go for it. Also, I would pay closer attention to the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card, which currently has a first year fee waived offered as well. They have never offered the fee waiver before since the card was introduced, so if you have been thinking about this card, this is the month to get it.

Best Current First Year Fee Waived Cards for September 2021

For this month’s list, the HSBC promotions are set to expire in 2 days, so if you have been thinking about it, now is the time to go for it. While the Brim World Elite MasterCard continues to be extended on a monthly basis, so there is no way to know when the extensions will end.

National Bank has added 3 credit cards to this month’s list (see more details in the “November 2021” section):

National Bank Platinum Mastercard
National Bank World Mastercard
National Bank World Elite Mastercard

8% Cash Back offer with National Bank

I have been asked by National Bank to do a review of one of their highly anticipated promotional offers, so here goes!

Looks like there is a new player in town to compete in the cash back sphere. We have been writing about how we think the Canadian rewards industry is shifting more towards cash back, rather than miles and points. This new offer is just more indication of this happening.

It has been over 2 years since our last update of this post. Quite a few changes were made since then, such as the re-branding of all the Aeroplan c-branded cards with American Express, CIBC and TD. Furthermore, there are some additional options from BMO and RBC. So this post is due for an update!
