Top Credit Cards for Purchasing Gas (updated January 28, 2014)

Since I’ve been on the road quite a bit the last few weeks, I saw that my gas bill is higher than normal, so I wanted to make sure that I maximize the number of points I earn each time I fill up.

First of all, I generally focus my purchases at Esso, Shell or Petro-Canada, because they all have a loyalty program associated with them. Between the three, I generally choose the one who will offer the lowest price and then fill up there. If they all have the same price, I give priority to Esso so that I can pile up my Aeroplan account because I value those points the most.

Devaluation with Capital One Aspire Cash Platinum MasterCard

Many of us were quite unhappy when the MBNA Smart Cash Platinum Plus MasterCard dropped their gas and groceries return from 3% to 2%. Now, Capital One is following MBNA’s lead. Capital One Canada has been one of my favourite institutions, namely because of the Capital One Aspire Travel World MasterCard. That is probably one of my favourite cards.

Top No Annual Fee Credit Cards (other than cash back)

I previously wrote about the top “cash” back no annual fee credit cards in Canada. Below are the top other types of no annual fee credit cards. Keep in mind that these credit cards are specific to a loyalty program. So unless you use these programs, you’re better off getting a cash back credit card instead.
