It is very slim pickings for co-branded hotel loyalty program credit cards in Canada. These are only 4 credit cards left to choose from. This also means that the market is completely wide open. Unfortunately, the weak Canadian dollar is really not helping the potential for a hotel rewards program to want to enter the Canadian market.
It has been a while since my last hotel expiry policies update. There have been a few changes ever since, so I thought I’d give my list a quick update. In deciding my preference for hotel loyalty programs, I give a lot of consideration to the expiry policy. I have been focusing my energy on 4 hotel rewards programs: Best Western Rewards, Hilton HHonors, IHG Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest.
Sometimes we overlook the fact that there are many methods when earning airline frequent flyer points. One of the easiest ways is staying at one of your favourite hotel brands and then transferring your points over to your airline loyalty program.
Most people believe that third party sites such as Priceline and Expedia offer the best prices in terms of hotel room rates, but is this really the case? With the Best Price Guaranteed policy offered by most hotel brands, you can easily find yourself locking in a good deal.
Best Western is one of my favourite hotel chains, which has a hotel loyalty program called Best Western Rewards. I do understand that Best Western hotels are not the more luxurious and glamorous. I also know that Best Western Rewards’ Elite statuses are nothing to brag about, even with the introduction of the Diamond Select status. If these are some of your major preferences, then you probably do not need to continue reading my post.
Best Western recently added its newest up-scale brand called Best Western Premier. They essentially renamed some of their top tier hotels under this brand, which is suppose to offer more deluxe features and amnesties. Some of the amenities and services that you should expect include:
For only 12,000 points, I was able to stay at the Best Western Fallsview in Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. The location was amazing. As a Platinum member they upgraded my room so we were on the top floor of the hotel with a great view.
Best Western Rewards is one of my favourite rewards programs. The 2 main reasons are because the hotels are very affordable if you were to pay for a stay. Secondly, their points never expire as a North American member. The 2 honourable mentions (reasons) goes to: MBNA for having a co-branded credit card to help Canadians jump-start their points account, and the hotel chain is very accessible having 4,000 locations worldwide.
I can’t believe it. I was started to get scared that more of the hotel credit cards will start getting discontinued, especially after the Capital One IHG credit cards, so I applied for the MBNA Best Western MasterCard, with the 20,000 sign up bonus, but of course, a week later, we now see a 40,000 points promotion. I plan to call MBNA to see if I can qualify for this promotion, but they only operate during the weekday.
