[DISCONTINUED] Scotiabank More Rewards Visa Card

I am a little late in the game for this post, but I thought I’d draw up a R.I.P. post anyway because there could be some confusion with the Scotiabank website. Even though Scotiabank still has an active page mentioning the More Rewards Visa Card, it specify that they are no longer accepting new application. So those of you still grandfathered with the card, I would suggest keeping it for as long as possible so you can still earn More points. Below were the highlights of the card:

AIR MILES Partners with Uber Eats and Door Dash

Effective today, March 31, 2020, Air Miles collectors can use their Cash Miles to redeem for Uber Eats and Door Dash eVouchers. The redemption rate is 190 Cash Miles for a $20 eVoucher code. This is pretty much the benchmark rate of return I would suggest for Air Miles redemptions. You are getting 10.5 cents per miles ($20 / 190 points). In other words, you are ahead of the game if you can get more than 11 cents per mile in value, but you do not want to dip below 10 cents per mile if you want to optimize your miles.

Miles and Points Strategy While Staying at Home

There are probably a lot of topics that I will be introducing in this post that probably merit a more full blown post. If there is something that you would like me to elaborate on, please let us know in the comment section below.

Depending on which country you live in, seems like this COVID-19 lockdown may drag on longer than we might hope. So in the meantime, does it even more any sense to keep earning frequent flyer miles and hotels points? Should we really just switch to a more predictable cash back rewards option or other retail programs?

Journie Rewards Replace Pioneer Bucks

Chevron, Ultramar and Pioneer have created a jointed venture to offer a new rewards program called Journie Rewards. At first glance, I am very excited by this new program as it should compete well with Esso Extra and Petro-Canada. That being said, this spells the end of Pioneer Bucks that was offered by Pioneer Energy.

Let’s take a closer look at the Journie Rewards program.

Expiry Policy

Points do not expire as long as there is an activity (earn or redeem) once every 12 months. The account then goes into inactive mode first. Accounts will be suspended if there is no activity for 60 days. After that, accounts get closed and all points are lost.

Loyalty Program COVID-19 Updates

Loyalty programs across the board have implemented temporary solutions to deal with any COVID-19 related matters. Below is a list of hyperlinks to useful information. I also included a small blurb for each company that may be more commonly relevant.

I tried to include companies more relevant to Canadians, but please let us know in the comment section below if you see any other links that we can add to the list (in alphabetical order).

Air Miles Team Up with Samsung

AIR MILES is expanding its partnership with Samsung Canada. You can now earn miles on Samsung mobile technology, including the new Samsung Galaxy S20 5G series. This is an addition to the existing method of earning miles through the Samsung Pay app and on Samsung products through the Air Miles merchandise catalogue

You now earn 1 mile for every $20 spent on mobile devices including smartphones, tablets, wearables and accessories purchased online.

Getting Paid in Scene Points? Unlimited Movie Passes at Cineplex Theatres?

You may have read about this recently but Cineplex (who runs loyalty program Scene Rewards) was bought out by a British media group, Cineworld. Shareholders approved this deal this month. As a result, Tanner Zipchen (pre-show host when you are waiting for your movie to start), was let go from his position. Turns out that he was being paid in Scene points?

Ok… the story is not that far fretched. Basically he was paid in Scene points when he first started working for Cineplex, before converting into a salary.

That being said, I was wondering how the Scene Rewards program would play out Cineworld taking over. I have so many questions. I held out writing this post until I got more details. So this is more of a preview post before I eventually write a full blown post when the things become more clear.

Carrot Rewards 2.0?

Remember the popular Carrot Rewards?

Carrot Rewards was an App that began in British Columbia and slowly expanded to other provinces. The App allowed members to earn rewards by achieving daily “steps” goals, including bonus points by teaming up with another member. There was also an amazing referral system, as well as earning rewards by completing surveys. But what I felt was the best benefit of Carrot Rewards was the ability to choose different loyalty program to bank your rewards to, such as: Aeroplan, More Rewards, Petro-Points, SCENE, etc.
