My Current Credit Card Portfolio
I have been asked this question many times. What do you have in your credit card portfolio? Well, here it is! I would like to note that I set my wife up on a different credit card portfolio than mine,…

Pretty much all my articles are about how much I love miles and points, but I thought I’d give a negative perspective about it instead. This is pretty much a post that gives suggestions on how the industry can improve. Some may be far fetched idea, but others are probably doable.
With the ever changing world of miles and points (for example, very little referral bonus opportunities left), I constantly feel like I need to change up my earning strategy. I previously wrote an article about my top ways to earn points. Today, I will talk about my favourite ways to earn and why.
American Express is offering a promotion for fixed reward redemptions that runs between February 16, 2016 to May 31, 2016. First of all, you can earn Membership Rewards points (“MR”) with the following credit cards:
I have been pretty harsh on National Bank, but I also really believe that they have a chance to break out with some better products and take over more of the market share. They are starting with a pretty good promotion with the National Bank World Elite MasterCard. But as usual, below are the highlights of the credit card:
Earning and redeeming miles and points are great. But what happens if you do not have enough rewards to book your trip? Then you need to pay the travel expenses (namely air fare, hotel and car rental). So what’s the best credit card to optimize the return on your rewards?
Marriott buying out Starwood could really mean the end of Starpoints. But for now, things remain status quo and it may be 12-18 more months before we see any sort of movement in the reward programs. For now, there is still time to accumulate Starpoints.
For those of you who don’t like paying annual fees. This is the post for you. Personally, I would actually prefer signing up for credit cards that waive their first year annual fees. Those are generally the credit cards with much more generous sign up bonuses. So you take the bonus first, then decide what you want to do with the credit card after the first year. In some cases, it may make sense to pay the annual fee.
“Fifth freedom” flights are actually a very interested concept. It is the right for an airline to fly between 2 foreign countries on a flight originating or ending in one’s own country. For example, Air China is an airline that originates from China. However, there is a route that flies between Montreal and Havana. All it is really doing is that it flies from Havana to Beijing, but it makes a stop in Montreal.
I think that we are due for an update for airline expiration policies, as a few of them have changed recently. I have only listed frequent flyer programs that have a direct way of earning miles with them in Canada. You can always keep these accounts active with co-share or alliance member partners.
